John Humphreys, People 1st Cymru, Project Manager 14-19 Education and Training
► People 1st is the Sector Skills Council for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism. The sector comprises 14 interlinked industries, which includes hospitality and tourism – Wales and the UK’s fastest growing industry. The role of People 1st in Wales is to respond to the skills needs and skills gaps identified by our employers and support the development of training and education pathways that meet those needs. In addition to employers, we work with key stakeholders and partners including DCELLS, Careers Wales, Visit Wales, regional tourism partnerships, Colegau Cymru, FE Colleges and schools to develop accurate and impartial information, advice and guidance. We have also developed and are delivering a world class customer service training programme called WorldHost for employers and training providers.
► There are two main areas where People 1st would see ‘Challenging Extremism’ as being of exceptional value:
1. Our sector employs over 2 million people in nearly 140,000 business enterprises in the UK. The sector depends on meeting the needs and exceeding the expectations of all customers through excellent team work and co-operation. A key element of this is tolerance and integration, both in terms of our customers and our fellow workers. The Challenging Extremism DVD is an excellent management and leadership development tool, and we will be encouraging our employers large and small to encompass it as part of their staff development programmes.
2. It is also an invaluable educational resource for 14-19 education in Wales, and indeed across the UK. In Wales it would be a valuable teaching and learning resource to support the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification, of which we as a nation are very proud. It could form the basis of an individual investigation or project or could provide the basis for discussion and work related to Wales, Europe and the World – a key element of the Welsh Baccalaureate, where young people are challenged to consider political and cultural issues, social challenges and responses and heritage and cultural perspectives.
