Got 2 DVD fits neatly into the Welsh Bac specification and the agreed syllabus for RS. I recently trialled the DVD with our Welsh Bac pupils as part of the PSE component of the Welsh Bac. After the session the pupils filled in a self evaluation sheet which asked their opinions about the topic of extremism: Is it something they know a lot or little about; is it something that they consider to be important to know about and did the DVD increase their knowledge and understanding of the topic of extremism. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive - 95% of pupils rated the DVD as a very effective tool for aiding discussion about extremism something that they were nearly all concerned about. Moreover, 92% of pupils believed that the DVD had greatly increased their knowledge and understanding about the topic of extremism. I also showed episode one of the DVD to a group of year 10 RS pupils to see what they thought about the DVD and the relevance of the topic and how they envisaged it working in a classroom environment.
Before watching the DVD I wasn’t entirely sure what extremism meant. The stereotype is that only Muslims are extremists but this video proves otherwise. The footage of the bomb in the underground was shocking and was a very effective opening to the DVD. Having the DVD broken into bitesize sections makes it easier to stay focussed and allows the opportunity for class discussion in between each section. The challenges at the end of each section also help aid class discussion.

When we hear the word extremism we immediately think of anger, hatred and violence. From this DVD we gained further knowledge about what extremism is - we had never considered the idea that extremism could be positive. The DVD gave us an insight into the different types of extremists. If you ask most people of our age what an extremist is they would think of Muslims - nobody I know would have thought that Martin Luther King was an extremist.

The DVD was extremely informative and the way it covers multiple forms of extremism was excellent and would be good for use in schools. The questions at the end provided an excellent way of summarising the content of the DVD in a coherent manner. It was good to see things on the DVD that are relevant to young people like Huw Edwards from Radio 1 and the student march about university fees. The DVD tackles issues surrounding extremism in an interesting but sensitive manner- making us think.
